Free Grade 5 MAP Math Practice Problems

Below are 14 free Grade 5 math practice problems with a complete answer key and worked explanations. They cover the strands a fifth grader meets on an adaptive math test like MAP Growth: place value and decimals, fractions, multiplication and division, volume and measurement, and geometry. Every question is an original Helix Math question — work through them with your child, then check the answer key at the bottom.

How to use this set

Have your child try all 14 on paper or in their head first — no peeking at the answer key. The problems get harder as you go: the first few warm up a single skill, and the last few ask your child to combine steps or reason about why an answer is right. Note not just what they miss, but where: a child who is solid on the early questions but stalls on fractions or volume isn't "behind in fifth-grade math" — they have a couple of specific skills that haven't firmed up yet.

The 14 problems

1. Rounding decimals. A weather station recorded 2.76 inches of rainfall and reports to the nearest tenth of an inch. What amount should it report?

2. Order of operations. What is the value of 20 − (3 × 4) + 5?

3. Place value. The value of the 3 in 1,300 is how many times the value of the 3 in 130?

4. Adding decimals. Marcus ran 2.6 kilometers on Monday and 3.85 kilometers on Wednesday. How many total kilometers did he run?

5. Adding fractions. Mia spent 2/5 of an hour biking and 1/3 of an hour practicing piano. What fraction of an hour did she spend on both activities combined?

6. Subtracting fractions. Marcus ate 3/8 of a pizza and Sofia ate 1/4 of the pizza. How much more of the pizza did Marcus eat than Sofia?

7. Multiplying fractions. Which of the following is equal to 4/5 × 7/8? A) 11/40 B) 28/13 C) 7/10 D) 11/13

8. Dividing a fraction by a whole number. A piece of clay that is 1/6 of a pound is divided equally among 3 students. What fraction of a pound does each student get?

9. Writing expressions. Which expression represents "triple the sum of 14 and 6"? A) 3 × (14 + 6) B) 3 × 14 + 6 C) 14 + (6 × 3) D) 3 + 14 + 6

10. Volume. A rectangular fish tank is 5 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 4 inches tall. What is its volume? A) 12 cubic inches B) 15 cubic inches C) 60 cubic inches D) 32 cubic inches

11. Unit conversion. A football field is 100 yards long. How many feet long is the field? A) 103 feet B) 112 feet C) 300 feet D) 1,200 feet

12. Comparing volumes. Prism A is 3 units long, 3 units wide, and 3 units tall. Prism B has the same length and width but is only 1 unit tall. What is the difference in volume between the two prisms? A) 9 cubic units B) 18 cubic units C) 22 cubic units D) 27 cubic units

13. Classifying shapes. Which statement is always true? A) All parallelograms are rectangles, but not all rectangles are parallelograms. B) All rectangles are parallelograms, but not all parallelograms are rectangles. C) All parallelograms are rectangles, and all rectangles are parallelograms. D) No rectangles are parallelograms.

14. Properties of a square (select all that apply). Which statements are always true about a square? A) It has four equal side lengths. B) It is also a rectangle. C) It is the only quadrilateral with four right angles. D) It is also a rhombus. E) It has exactly one pair of parallel sides.

What the right answers don't show

Look at questions 5 through 8 — the four fraction operations. This is the year fractions stop being "draw a pizza" and start being arithmetic, and it's the single biggest predictor of whether middle-school math goes smoothly. A fifth grader can memorize "multiply straight across" for 4/5 × 7/8 and still add the denominators on 2/5 + 1/3, or freeze on when to divide. That gap between knowing a procedure and knowing which one to use is what we call fluent but fragile — and it's exactly why fractions are the fault line for so many kids.

A single right answer — or a single score — hides which of these are secure, which are shaky, and which are simply missing.

Is your fifth grader ready for fall MAP testing?

Most schools give MAP Growth in a fall window (often late August into September), and a fifth grader's fall score leans heavily on fourth-grade foundations — multi-digit multiplication, fraction equivalence, and place value — as much as on new fifth-grade material. If your child sailed through questions 1–8 here, those foundations are likely solid. If a few tripped them up, the summer is the cheapest, lowest-pressure time to firm them up before the school year layers new material on top.

Answer key and explanations

Try each problem first, then open the answer.

1. Round 2.76 to the nearest tenth — Answer: 2.8

The tenths digit is 7. The next digit (hundredths) is 6, which is 5 or more, so round the tenths up: 2.76 → 2.8.

2. 20 − (3 × 4) + 5 — Answer: 13

Do the parentheses first: 3 × 4 = 12. Then left to right: 20 − 12 = 8, and 8 + 5 = 13.

3. Value of the 3 in 1,300 vs. 130 — Answer: 10 times

In 1,300 the 3 is in the hundreds place (value 300). In 130 the 3 is in the tens place (value 30). 300 ÷ 30 = 10, so it is worth 10 times as much.

4. 2.6 + 3.85 — Answer: 6.45 kilometers

Line up the decimal points: 2.60 + 3.85 = 6.45. (Writing 2.6 as 2.60 keeps the place values aligned.)

5. 2/5 + 1/3 — Answer: 11/15

Find a common denominator of 15: 2/5 = 6/15 and 1/3 = 5/15. Then 6/15 + 5/15 = 11/15.

6. 3/8 − 1/4 — Answer: 1/8

Rewrite 1/4 as 2/8. Then 3/8 − 2/8 = 1/8.

7. 4/5 × 7/8 — Answer: 7/10

Multiply across: (4 × 7)/(5 × 8) = 28/40. Simplify by dividing top and bottom by 4: 7/10.

8. 1/6 of a pound shared among 3 — Answer: 1/18

Dividing by 3 means 1/6 ÷ 3 = 1/6 × 1/3 = 1/18 of a pound each.

9. "Triple the sum of 14 and 6" — Answer: 3 × (14 + 6)

"The sum of 14 and 6" must be grouped first, then tripled: 3 × (14 + 6) = 3 × 20 = 60. (Option B, 3 × 14 + 6, triples only the 14.)

10. Volume of the fish tank — Answer: 60 cubic inches

Volume = length × width × height = 5 × 3 × 4 = 60 cubic inches.

11. 100 yards in feet — Answer: 300 feet

There are 3 feet in a yard, so 100 × 3 = 300 feet.

12. Difference in volume — Answer: 18 cubic units

Prism A: 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. Prism B: 3 × 3 × 1 = 9. Difference: 27 − 9 = 18 cubic units.

13. Rectangles and parallelograms — Answer: B

A rectangle fits the definition of a parallelogram (two pairs of parallel sides), so all rectangles are parallelograms. But a parallelogram doesn't need right angles, so not all parallelograms are rectangles.

14. Always true about a square — Answer: A, B, and D

A square has four equal sides (A ✓), it is a special rectangle (B ✓), and a special rhombus (D ✓). C is false — rectangles also have four right angles, so a square isn't the only one. E is false — a square has two pairs of parallel sides.
