6th Grade MAP Math Scores: Average, Good & Growth (2026)

Sixth grade is often when MAP® scores begin showing up in math-placement conversations. Some districts use MAP alongside other measures when making seventh-grade math placements, so it is worth asking your school exactly how the score is used. When your sixth grader's report says 213 and you are not yet sure what the school will do with it, the number carries more weight than it did last year. If you are looking up 6th grade MAP math scores to find out whether 213 is good, it is a little above the fall average for the grade, at about the 57th percentile. What comes next depends on the school's threshold, and on something the score does not show: whether the ratio reasoning that seventh grade is built on is actually there. What is the average MAP math score for 6th grade?

The average sixth grader scores about 210 on the MAP math test in fall, 216 in winter, and 220 in spring. Those are the medians from NWEA's 2025 norms, so half of sixth graders score above each number and half below. The typical range is about 22 points wide in fall and 24 in spring.

What is a good MAP math score for 6th grade?

The season decides it. A fixed score reads lower as the year goes on, because the rest of the grade keeps learning. The table below reads a range of sixth-grade scores against the 2025 norms. Treat every percentile as approximate; NWEA ties the norms to specific testing weeks, and your school's window may differ.

Three readings:

  • Inside the typical range (about 199 to 221 in fall, 208 to 232 in spring). Half of all sixth graders land here. A fall 205 is at about the 38th percentile: under average, and normal.
  • Above the 75th percentile (roughly 222 and up in fall, 233 and up in spring). The top quarter. A fall 225 is at about the 83rd percentile and a fall 230 at about the 89th. This is the band where advanced-math placement conversations often happen, and the threshold is the district's, not NWEA's. Ask for the specific percentile or RIT the school uses, and which season it reads.
  • Below the 25th percentile (under about 199 in fall, under 208 in spring). The bottom quarter. A fall 200 is at about the 27th percentile. At this grade that reading most often points at fifth-grade fraction operations to review, because sixth-grade ratio work assumes them.

How much should a 6th grader's MAP score grow in a year?

The average sixth grader gains about 6 RIT points from fall to winter and about 4 from winter to spring, roughly 10 across the year. That matches fifth grade and is well under the 13 to 15 that is typical in elementary school. In seventh grade it falls to about 7. Growth on the scale compresses with age; that is a property of the instrument, not a comment on the student.

Two readings for one report:

  • Six points by winter is on pace. Most of the year's growth lands before the winter test at every grade.
  • Level and growth are different facts. A sixth grader at 218 in fall who reaches 228 in spring grew a typical amount from an above-average start. A sixth grader at 228 in both fall and spring is well above average and did not move. If your child was near the same number a year earlier, the flat trajectory matters at least as much as the percentile, and a single score cannot show it. Put last spring's number next to this one.

NWEA's growth figures are grade-level averages, not a target for one child, and students who start higher tend to gain somewhat fewer points.

What math the test is sampling in 6th grade

Sixth grade is the year ratios arrive, and ratios are the idea seventh-grade proportions and eighth-grade slope are built on. The test samples the whole grade, but the ratio work carries the most weight going forward.

  • Ratios, rates, and percent (6.RP.A.1, 6.RP.A.2, 6.RP.A.3). Comparing two quantities, the jump from "3 cups to 2" to "1.5 cups per cup," and percent as a rate per 100.
  • Dividing fractions and the negative number line (6.NS.A.1, 6.NS.C.6). Dividing a fraction by a fraction, which many sixth graders can do before they can explain, and then negatives, absolute value, and all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
  • Expressions and one-step equations (6.EE.A.2, 6.EE.B.7). Letters begin standing for numbers. Writing expressions, solving one-step equations, and graphing inequalities. The hard part is that the answer stops being a number and becomes a relationship.
  • Area of triangles and volume with fractional edges (6.G.A.1, 6.G.A.2).
  • Statistics (6.SP.B.5). Center and spread, dot plots and box plots.

A fall sixth-grade score is standing mostly on fifth-grade material, especially the four fraction operations and decimals to the thousandths, because the test comes before most of the new content is taught.

The placement question and the skill question are connected. A student can answer familiar unit-rate questions correctly without fully understanding why the division works. That difference becomes much more important when proportional reasoning gets more complex in seventh grade. The overall score does not separate that child from one who understands the ratio, because both answer the item correctly. The math transitions that decide everything follows the fractions-to-ratios-to-proportions chain across the three grades.

What to examine alongside the score

Four things worth checking in a sixth grader this fall, placement letter or not. Each is a specific behavior you can watch, not a verdict.

  1. Can she turn a ratio into a rate? "A recipe uses 3 cups of flour for 2 cups of sugar. How much flour per cup of sugar?" Watch whether she divides, and whether she can say why 3 ÷ 2 is the right move. The division is procedure; the "why" is the ratio understanding seventh grade needs.
  2. Can she explain 3 ÷ 1/2? If she gets 6, ask why the answer is bigger than 3. A child who says "you flip and multiply" has the rule. A child who says "because there are two halves in every one" has the idea.
  3. Where do -3 and -7 sit? Which is bigger. Which is farther from zero. A sixth grader who says -7 is bigger because seven is bigger is treating the sign as decoration, and that confusion follows into seventh-grade integer arithmetic.
  4. Is percent a rate or a trick? "What is 30% of 60?" Then, "what does 30% mean?" If the first is fine and the second is a shrug, percent is a procedure without the ratio under it.

If the school report includes instructional-area scores alongside the overall RIT, a lower area tells you which part of math to look at first, though it will not name the skill.

What you can do this week

  1. Write down the score, the season, and the percentile. Find the row above and note the quarter.
  2. Ask the school for the placement criteria in writing. Which test, which season, which percentile or RIT, and whether there is a second measure. Do it before the letter arrives, not after.
  3. Run the four checks at the table. Ten minutes. You are watching how she reasons, not grading her.
  4. Pick ratios or fractions, not both. If 3 ÷ 1/2 was a rule and not an idea, that comes first. Sixth-grade ratios are built on it.
  5. Keep the placement stakes off her. She knows the class matters. She does not need to know it rides on a number from September.

Common questions about 6th grade MAP math scores

Is 220 a good MAP math score for a 6th grader?

Yes. A 220 is at about the 73rd percentile in fall, the 59th in winter, and the 50th in spring for sixth grade. Above average in every season, and near the top quarter in fall. By spring it sits at the median, where the average sixth grader ends the year.

What MAP score does a 6th grader need for advanced math or algebra in 8th grade?

There is no national number. Districts set their own thresholds, often a fall or winter percentile somewhere in the 80s or 90s, sometimes paired with a second measure such as a classroom assessment or teacher recommendation. A fall 225 is at about the 83rd percentile and a fall 230 at about the 89th, which is the band where many of those thresholds fall. Ask the school for its exact criteria. A score just under a cutoff is a reason to ask about the appeal or retest process, not a closed door.

What is a low MAP math score for 6th grade?

A score under about 199 in fall or 208 in spring is in the bottom quarter for the grade. A fall 195 is at about the 17th percentile. That describes the score, not the child. At this grade it most often means the fifth-grade fraction operations need review before the ratio work can settle, which is a specific and workable target.

Why did my 6th grader's percentile drop when the score went up?

Because the percentile compares the score to other sixth graders in the same season, and they were learning too. A 215 in fall is at about the 62nd percentile. A 221 in spring is at about the 52nd.
