5th Grade MAP Math Scores: Average, Good & Growth (2026)
The fall MAP® report came home in your fifth grader's folder, folded in half, with a 211 on it and a percentile you had to read twice. The teacher's note said "right on track." You believe her. You also watched this same child add 1/2 and 1/3 last night and get 2/5. If you are looking up 5th grade MAP math scores to find out whether 211 is good, the short version is that it is a little above average for the season, and that the number alone was never going to tell you about the fraction. This page gives you the 2026 numbers for fifth grade, what a good score looks like in fall, winter, and spring, how much growth to expect across the year, and which specific skills to check alongside a fifth-grade score.
The short answer
- The average 5th grade MAP math score is about 206 in fall, 212 in winter, and 216 in spring, using the NWEA 2025 norms.
- The typical range (25th to 75th percentile) runs from about 195 to 217 in fall and 204 to 228 in spring. Anywhere inside it is normal.
- A score above 217 in fall or 228 in spring is in the top quarter for the grade. A fall score of 220 sits at about the 81st percentile.
- Average growth across fifth grade is about 10 RIT® points from fall to spring, less than in earlier grades.

Percentiles are calculated from NWEA 2025 MAP Growth math norms (publicly published Quick Reference). A percentile says where a score sits against same-grade peers. It does not say which specific skills are secure and which need review; only a skill-level check can do that.
What is the average MAP math score for 5th grade?
The average fifth grader scores about 206 on the MAP math test in fall, 212 in winter, and 216 in spring. Those are the medians from NWEA's 2025 norms, which means half of fifth graders score above each number and half below. The typical range around them is wide: about 22 points in fall and 24 in spring.

What is a good MAP math score for 5th grade?
"Good" depends on the season, because the same score moves down the percentile ladder as the year goes on and the class as a whole learns. The table below reads a range of fifth-grade scores against the 2025 norms. Treat every percentile as approximate; the norms are tied to specific testing weeks and your school's window may differ by a few weeks.

Three readings of the table:
- Inside the typical range (about 195 to 217 in fall, 204 to 228 in spring). Half of all fifth graders land here. Above the median is "above average," below it is "below average," and both are ordinary. A fall 200 is at about the 35th percentile, which is well inside the normal band even though it is under the average.
- Above the 75th percentile (roughly 218 and up in fall, 229 and up in spring). The top quarter for the grade. A fall 225 is at about the 88th percentile, and a 230 at about the 93rd. This is a genuinely high score, and it is also the band where a fraction skill that needs review is easiest to miss, because nothing about the number suggests looking.
- Below the 25th percentile (under about 195 in fall, under 204 in spring). The bottom quarter. A fall 190 sits at about the 16th percentile. That usually points at specific earlier skills to review, most often multi-digit multiplication and fraction equivalence, not at a broad judgment about the child.

How much should a 5th grader's MAP score grow in a year?
The average fifth grader gains about 6 RIT points from fall to winter and about 4 from winter to spring, for roughly 10 points across the school year. That is noticeably less than the 13 points that are typical in fourth grade, and it keeps shrinking in the grades after. Growth compressing with age is a property of the scale, not a sign that learning slows down.
Two consequences for reading your own child's report:
- Most of the year's growth lands by winter. A fifth grader who gains 6 points between the fall and winter tests is on pace, even though 6 sounds small.
- Level and growth are different questions. A fifth grader who scored 208 in fall and 218 in spring grew a typical amount from a slightly-below-average start. A fifth grader who scored 226 in both is well above average and has not moved. If your child was near the same number a year earlier, that flat trajectory deserves as much attention as the percentile does, and a single score cannot show it. You need last year's number next to this one.
NWEA's growth figures are grade-level averages, not targets for an individual child. Expected growth also depends on the starting score, and students who begin the year higher tend to grow somewhat less in RIT terms.
What math the test is sampling in 5th grade
Fifth grade is the year fractions turn into arithmetic. The test samples across the grade, but fraction work is especially important because so much of sixth-grade ratio reasoning builds on it.
- Operations with fractions (5.NF). Adding and subtracting with unlike denominators, multiplying a fraction by a fraction, and dividing with unit fractions. The two ideas underneath matter more than the procedures: that multiplying by a fraction smaller than one makes a quantity smaller, and that "how many halves fit into three" is a division question.
- Decimals to the thousandths (5.NBT.A.3). Reading, comparing, rounding, and all four operations on decimals. The 10-times and one-tenth relationship from fourth grade has to become automatic here.
- Volume (5.MD.C.5). Filling a rectangular solid with unit cubes, then noticing that counting them is the same as multiplying the three dimensions.
- The coordinate plane, first quadrant (5.G.A.1). Plotting and reading points, which returns in sixth grade with all four quadrants.
A fifth-grade fall score leans heavily on fourth-grade material, since the test is given before most of the new content has been taught. Fraction equivalence (4.NF.A.1), comparing fractions (4.NF.A.2), and two-digit multiplication are doing a lot of the work in a September number.
Here is the case to keep in mind. A fifth grader who can find a common denominator will usually get the fraction-addition questions right. Whether she understands that 1/2 + 1/3 has to be bigger than 1/2 is a different fact, and a single overall score does not settle it. What to examine alongside the score
Whatever the number, four things are worth checking in a fifth grader this fall. Each is a specific, watchable behavior, not a judgment about the child.
- Does she know which operation a fraction word problem wants? Hand her "a 7-foot ribbon is cut into 4 equal pieces; how long is each piece?" Nothing in the sentence says divide. Plenty of fifth graders who can compute 7 ÷ 4 stall here.
- Are the multiplication facts automatic? Not "can she get there," but "does she get there without counting." Fraction work, long division, and decimals all sit on top of this, and a fifth grader still skip-counting to 7 × 8 is spending working memory she needs elsewhere.
- Do decimals behave like place value or like a separate set of rules? Ask her to put 0.7, 0.65, and 0.09 in order. If 0.65 wins because "65 is bigger," the decimal system is a memorized ritual rather than an extension of whole-number place value.
- Can she place 3/4 and 5/4 on a number line? Fractions greater than one are where "fraction as pieces of a pizza" stops working and "fraction as a number" has to take over.
The school report may also give instructional-area scores alongside the overall RIT. If it does, a noticeably lower number in one area points you toward the right part of math to look at, even though it will not name the skill.

What you can do this week
- Write down the score, the season, and the percentile. Find the row in the tables above. Note whether the score is in the top, middle, or bottom quarter for the season it was taken in.
- Find last year's score if you can. The fourth-grade spring number next to the fifth-grade fall number tells you about trajectory, which the single score cannot.
- Run the four checks above at the kitchen table. Ten minutes. You are not testing her; you are watching how she thinks.
- Pick one skill, not a general goal. "Adding fractions with unlike denominators" is a workable target for the next three weeks. "Getting better at math" is not.
- If she is not anxious about the number, do not make her anxious. The score is for you to plan with. She does not need to feel measured by it.
Common questions about 5th grade MAP math scores
Is 210 a good MAP math score for a 5th grader?
A 210 is at about the 60th percentile in fall, the 45th in winter, and the 37th in spring for fifth grade. In every season it is inside the typical range. It reads as slightly above average in fall and slightly below by spring, which is the normal drift of a fixed score against a class that keeps learning. What is a high MAP math score for 5th grade?
A score above about 217 in fall or 228 in spring is in the top quarter for the grade. Scores of 230 and above are at roughly the 93rd percentile in fall, and 240 and above at about the 98th. Some districts use a fall or winter percentile threshold for advanced-math placement in sixth grade, and the threshold varies by district, so ask the school for the specific cutoff rather than assuming one.
Why did my 5th grader's percentile drop when the score went up?
Because the percentile compares the score to other fifth graders in the same season, and they were learning too. A 215 in fall is at about the 71st percentile; a 218 in spring is at about the 54th. What should a 5th grader score on the MAP test to be ready for 6th grade?
There is no single MAP score that determines sixth-grade readiness, and the norms do not define one. Readiness for sixth-grade ratios depends more on whether the fraction operations, decimals, and multi-step problem solving are secure than on the overall score, which is why the checks above matter regardless of the percentile.
A fifth-grade MAP score tells you where your child's overall math performance sits against other fifth graders this season. That is useful, and it is the question the number was built to answer. The question most parents actually have in fifth grade is narrower: are the fractions secure, or are they going to become a problem in sixth-grade ratios?
