4th Grade MAP Math Scores: Average, Good & Growth (2026)

Two fourth graders in the same class both scored 205 on the fall MAP® math test. Both families got the same "above average" note. One child can multiply 23 by 47 on paper without a pause and thinks 3/8 is bigger than 3/5 because eight is bigger than five. The other compares fractions like she was born to it and still counts on her fingers for 6 × 8. Same score. Different foundations. What is the average MAP math score for 4th grade?

The average fourth grader scores about 197 on the MAP math test in fall, 204 in winter, and 210 in spring. These are the medians from NWEA's 2025 norms, so half of fourth graders score above each number and half below. The typical range is about 22 points wide in fall and 24 in spring.

What is a good MAP math score for 4th grade?

Season first, then score. The same number reads lower as the year goes on, because the comparison group keeps learning. The table below reads a range of fourth-grade scores against the 2025 norms. Every percentile is approximate; the norms are tied to particular testing weeks and your school's window may differ.

Three readings:

  • Inside the typical range (about 186 to 208 in fall, 198 to 222 in spring). Half of all fourth graders land here. A fall 195 is at about the 45th percentile: a touch under average and entirely normal.
  • Above the 75th percentile (roughly 209 and up in fall, 223 and up in spring). The top quarter. A fall 215 is at about the 87th percentile, a fall 225 at about the 96th. Fourth grade is a common year for gifted screening, and a district that uses MAP for it will usually name a percentile threshold; ask for the specific number rather than guessing.   • Below the 25th percentile (under about 186 in fall, under 198 in spring). The bottom quarter. A fall 185 is at about the 23rd percentile. That reading usually points at specific earlier skills to review, most often multiplication facts and fractions on a number line. It is not a judgment about the child.

The two 205s from the opening both read at about the 69th percentile in fall and about the 39th by spring. Same drift for both. The percentile moved; neither child got worse at math. Why a percentile can drop while the score rises covers that in full.

How much should a 4th grader's MAP score grow in a year?

The average fourth grader gains about 7 RIT points from fall to winter and about 6 from winter to spring, roughly 13 points across the year. That is a little less than the 15 that is typical in third grade and a little more than the 10 that is typical in fifth. Growth on the MAP scale shrinks with age by design; it is not a signal that learning slows.

What that means for one report:

  • Half the year's growth by winter is on pace. A fourth grader who gains 6 or 7 points between September and January is exactly typical.
  • Two scores tell you something one cannot. If your child scored near 205 last spring and near 205 again this fall, that is the summer. If the score is still near 205 next spring, when the typical fourth grader has gained 13, the flat line is the thing to look at, more than the percentile. You cannot see a trajectory in a single number.

NWEA's growth figures are averages for the grade, not targets for a particular child, and students starting from a higher score tend to gain somewhat fewer points.

What math the test is sampling in 4th grade

Fourth grade is where the two children from the opening come apart. One of them has the multi-digit arithmetic and not the fraction sense. The other has the reverse. The test samples both, so both end up with a 205, and the overall score does not say which half is doing the work.

  • Fractions (4.NF.A.1, 4.NF.A.2, 4.NF.B.3). Equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with different denominators, and adding and subtracting when the denominators match. This is the foundation that fifth-grade fraction arithmetic and sixth-grade ratios both rest on.
  • Decimals as fractions (4.NF.C.6). Tenths and hundredths written a second way. Your child has to see 0.7 and 7/10 as the same number, not as two topics.
  • Multi-digit multiplication and division (4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6). Two digits by two digits, and four-digit dividends. Place value is what makes the methods work rather than magic.
  • Multiplicative comparison (4.OA.A.1). The shift from "5 more than" to "5 times as many," which is a genuinely different idea and trips up a lot of fourth graders in word problems.
  • Angles and measurement (4.MD.C.5). Angles in degrees for the first time, plus unit conversion and area and perimeter of rectangles.

A fall fourth-grade score leans on third-grade material, because the test comes before most of this has been taught: times tables, fractions on a number line, and area.

The reason it matters which half of the 205 is doing the work: the child with the arithmetic and without the fraction sense will look fine through fourth grade and hit fifth-grade fraction operations hard. The child with the fraction sense and slow facts will be slowed down everywhere and blocked nowhere. Different problems, different fixes, same score. What to examine alongside the score

Four things to watch in a fourth grader this fall. Each takes a minute and tells you something the number does not.

  1. Which is bigger, 3/8 or 3/5? Same numerator, different denominator. A fourth grader who picks 3/8 because eight is larger is comparing whole numbers, not fractions. This is a very common fourth-grade misconception and worth fixing early.
  2. Is 0.7 the same as 7/10? Ask it straight. Then ask which is bigger, 0.7 or 0.65. If 0.65 wins because "65 is more than 7," decimals are a separate ritual rather than fractions in a different costume.
  3. Can he explain one step of 23 × 47? Not do it, explain it. "Why do you write a zero on the second line?" A child who says "because you just do" has the procedure and not the place value under it.
  4. "Five times as many" or "five more"? "Maya has 4 marbles. Jon has 5 times as many. How many does Jon have?" Watch for 9. It is a common answer and a specific, fixable confusion.

What you can do this week

  1. Write down the score, the season, and the percentile. Find the row in the tables above and note the quarter.
  2. Run the four checks over a few days. Casually. A fourth grader who feels quizzed performs worse than one who is chatting.
  3. Choose the half that needs work. Facts or fractions. If both, fractions first; fifth grade is waiting on them.
  4. Give it three weeks on one skill. Comparing fractions with a number line, ten minutes a day, beats a general "math practice" hour.
  5. If she is not worried about the number, do not make her worried. The score is planning information for you. It is not a grade for her.

Is 210 a good MAP math score for a 4th grader?

Yes. A 210 is at about the 79th percentile in fall, the 64th in winter, and the 50th in spring for fourth grade. It is above average in every season and near the top quarter in fall. What is a high MAP math score for 4th grade?

A score above about 208 in fall or 222 in spring is in the top quarter for fourth grade. A fall 220 is at about the 92nd percentile and a fall 230 at about the 98th. A 225 in fall, at about the 96th, is often the kind of number that triggers a gifted-program conversation; whether it qualifies depends on the district's threshold, which you should ask for directly.

What should a 4th grader score on MAP to be on grade level?

MAP percentiles tell you how a child compares with other fourth graders. They do not, by themselves, determine whether a child has met fourth-grade standards.
