3rd Grade MAP Math Scores: Average, Good & Growth (2026)

Third grade is often the year the number starts to matter. It is the first year of state testing, the year multiplication arrives, and for many parents the first time a MAP® report comes home with a percentile they feel they ought to understand. Your third grader's says 188. If you have been searching 3rd grade MAP math scores to find out whether that is fine, it is. A fall 188 is a little above the third-grade average. It is also true that the number describes where he sits in a large group this season, and not whether the times tables are automatic yet. This page gives you the 2026 third-grade numbers, what a good score is in each season, how much a third grader typically grows in a year, and the handful of skills worth checking alongside it.

Percentiles are calculated from NWEA 2025 MAP Growth math norms (publicly published Quick Reference). A percentile says where a score sits against same-grade peers. It does not say which specific skills are secure and which need review; only a skill-level check can do that.

What is the average MAP math score for 3rd grade?

The average third grader scores about 184 on the MAP math test in fall, 193 in winter, and 199 in spring. Those are the medians from NWEA's 2025 norms: half of third graders score above each number and half below. The typical range around the median is about 22 points wide in every season.

Notice how far the average moves across the year. A 199 is the spring median, and the same 199 in fall would have been at about the 83rd percentile. Third graders learn a great deal of new math between September and May, and the norms show it.

What is a good MAP math score for 3rd grade?

It depends on the season, because a fixed score slides down the percentile ladder as the class learns. The table reads a range of third-grade scores against the 2025 norms. Treat every percentile as approximate; NWEA ties the norms to specific testing weeks and your school's window may sit a few weeks off.

Three readings:

  • Inside the typical range (about 173 to 195 in fall, 188 to 210 in spring). Half of all third graders land here, and a score anywhere in the band is ordinary. A fall 180 is at about the 40th percentile, under the average and comfortably normal.
  • Above the 75th percentile (roughly 196 and up in fall, 211 and up in spring). The top quarter. A fall 200 is at about the 84th percentile and a fall 205 at about the 91st. Some districts screen for gifted or advanced programs in third grade using a MAP percentile, and the threshold varies, so ask the school which one it uses before reading anything into the number.
  • Below the 25th percentile (under about 173 in fall, under 188 in spring). The bottom quarter. A fall 175 is at about the 29th percentile. At this age that usually points at specific earlier skills to review, most often addition and subtraction facts and place value, rather than at anything about the child.

How much should a 3rd grader's MAP score grow in a year?

The average third grader gains about 9 RIT points from fall to winter and about 6 from winter to spring, roughly 15 points across the school year. That is the largest annual growth of any grade from third upward. By fifth grade the typical gain is 10, and by seventh it is 7.

Two things follow from that:

  • Most of the growth lands before winter. A third grader who gains 8 or 9 points by the winter test is right on pace, and a spring gain that looks smaller is normal, not a slowdown.
  • A flat score means more in third grade than later. Because typical growth is large, a third grader who scores close to the same number in fall and spring has moved well below the average pace. That is only visible with two scores side by side. One score cannot tell you about trajectory, and the norms are grade-level averages rather than a target for one child.

What math the test is sampling in 3rd grade

Picture a third-grade classroom in October. The teacher has two things on the board most days: a multiplication fact and a number line with fractions on it. Those two ideas matter throughout third grade, and they are worth checking alongside the overall score.

  • Multiplication and division within 100 (3.OA.C.7). Times tables, and division as the unknown-factor question: 40 ÷ 4 means "what times 4 makes 40." The test also samples two-step word problems (3.OA.D.8) that chain one operation onto another.
  • Fractions as numbers (3.NF.A.2). The first year fractions are points on a number line rather than shaded pictures. Unit fractions, equivalence, and comparing fractions that share a numerator or a denominator.
  • Area and perimeter (3.MD.C.6, 3.MD.D.8). Area as counting unit squares, then as multiplication in disguise. Perimeter as adding every side. Keeping the two apart is a real skill.
  • Time and measurement (3.MD.A.1). Telling time to the minute, elapsed time, and measuring to the quarter inch.

A fall third-grade score leans heavily on second-grade material, since the test comes before most of the new content is taught: addition and subtraction within 100, place value to 1,000, and the beginnings of skip-counting.

The classroom example that matters: the child who answers 7 × 8 by counting up from 7 × 5 is getting the right answer and doing three times the work. On a timed page or inside a two-step problem, that extra work is where the errors come from. An overall score does not separate the child who knows the fact from the child who reconstructs it every time, because both can get the item right. Third grade is the year that difference is cheapest to close.

What to examine alongside the score

Whatever the number, four things are worth watching in a third grader this fall. Each is something you can see in ten minutes at the table.

  1. Are the facts recalled or rebuilt? Ask 6 × 7, then 8 × 4, then 9 × 6. Watch for the pause, the finger-tapping, the eyes going up to skip-count. Recall by spring is the goal; in fall, the direction of travel is what matters.
  2. Which is bigger, 1/4 or 1/6? A third grader who says 1/6 because six is bigger than four is treating a fraction as two whole numbers. That is a very common fraction misconception, and it is worth addressing before fourth grade.
  3. Can he hold a two-step problem? "You have 3 packs of 8 stickers and give away 5. How many are left?" The math is easy. Keeping the first answer in mind while doing the second step is the skill.
  4. Does he mix up area and perimeter? Draw a 3-by-4 rectangle. Ask for the space inside, then the distance around. Two different questions, two different answers, and plenty of third graders give the same number for both.

If the school report includes instructional-area scores alongside the overall RIT, a lower number in one area tells you which part of math to look at first, even though it will not name the specific skill.

What you can do this week

  1. Write down the score, the season, and the percentile. Find the row above and note which quarter it lands in for the season it was taken.
  2. Do the four checks above, casually. Over dinner, in the car. He should not feel tested.
  3. Pick facts or fractions, not both. If recall is slow, five minutes a day on one times table at a time. If 1/6 beat 1/4, a week of number-line fractions. One target for three weeks.
  4. Keep the number to yourself unless he asks. A third grader does not need a percentile. He needs to know that 6 × 7 is 42.
  5. Save the report. Next spring's score next to this one will tell you about growth, which this one alone cannot.

Common questions about 3rd grade MAP math scores

Is 200 a good MAP math score for 3rd grade?

Yes. A 200 is at about the 84th percentile in fall, the 67th in winter, and the 52nd in spring for third grade. In fall it is in the top quarter; by spring it is right at the average. Both are true of the same score, because the comparison group learned a year of math in between.

Is 190 a good MAP score for a 3rd grader?

A 190 is at about the 65th percentile in fall, the 43rd in winter, and the 30th in spring. It is inside the typical range in every season, above average in fall and below it by spring. It is a normal third-grade score, and where it sits in the year matters more than the number itself.

What MAP score is gifted for 3rd grade?

The norms do not define "gifted." Districts that screen with MAP usually use a percentile threshold, commonly somewhere in the 90s, and it varies by district. A fall 205 is at about the 91st percentile and a fall 210 at about the 95th. Ask the school for its specific cutoff and which season it uses. A high third-grade score describes performance well above third-grade norms for that testing window; it is not a permanent label.

Should I worry about a 180 in 3rd grade?

A fall 180 is at about the 40th percentile, inside the typical range and about 4 points under the average. It is not a reason to worry. It is a reason to run the four checks above and see whether the addition facts and place value from second grade are secure, because those are what a fall third-grade score mostly reflects.
