Sample question 1 · Multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10
Coach Bell orders 7 baskets of apples. Each basket holds 60 apples. How many apples does Coach Bell order in all?

Answer: 420. 7 × 60 = 420. The wrong answers are real slips: 42 drops the zero, 67 adds, and 4200 doubles the zero.
Sample question 2 · Compare fractions with same numerator or denominator
Both fractions describe parts of the same-sized whole. Use <, >, or = to make the statement true. 7/8 ____ 3/8

What grade 3 math covers
Five areas, and one of them does most of the work.
Multiplication and division. The center of the year: times tables within 100, division as the unknown-factor question ("40 divided by 4" means "what times 4 makes 40?"), and two-step word problems that chain an operation onto another. Fluency here is what every later grade quietly assumes.
Fractions. The first year fractions are numbers with places on the number line, not just shaded pictures. Unit fractions, equivalence, and comparing fractions that share a numerator or a denominator. The idea that 1/6 is smaller than 1/4 because sixths are smaller pieces is the seed of everything grades 4 and 5 build.
Measurement and data. Telling time to the minute and working out intervals, measuring lengths to the quarter inch, and reading the line plots those measurements make.
Area and perimeter. Area arrives as counting unit squares, then as multiplication in disguise. Perimeter is adding every side, and keeping the two ideas apart is half the battle.
Geometry. Shape categories: what makes a quadrilateral a quadrilateral, and why a rhombus belongs even when it does not look like a rectangle.
If the times tables are automatic and fractions have places on a number line, the year usually goes well.
What the right answers don't show
Two of the questions ask for the same skill from opposite directions. One gives four shapes described in words and asks for them in order of perimeter, which means computing all four and comparing. Another asks which step comes first in a two-step muffin problem, which is not arithmetic at all: it is knowing what to do before doing it. Plenty of third graders who know every fact stall on the second kind.
The fraction sort is worth watching too. Putting 1/6, 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2 in order looks easy until a child sorts by denominator and gets it exactly backwards. That mistake is not carelessness; it is the whole-number rule applied where it no longer works, and it is the single most common grade 3 fraction slip.
Is your third grader ready for fall MAP testing?
Most schools give MAP Growth in a fall window, often late August into September. A third grader's fall score leans heavily on second-grade foundations, addition and subtraction fluency and place value, as much as on new grade 3 material.

Choose the grade whose material you want to practice. For review before a new school year, choose the grade your child just completed. Grade labels describe the material, not your child's ability.
