8th Grade MAP Math Scores: Average, Good & Growth (2026)

Your eighth grader scored 226 on the fall MAP® math test. It is above the average for the grade, at about the 59th percentile, and the algebra teacher seems unbothered. You are less sure, because two weeks into the course he is already saying "I don't get slope" and you remember him saying the same thing about unit rates in sixth grade. What is the average MAP math score for 8th grade?

The average eighth grader scores about 222 on the MAP math test in fall, 226 in winter, and 229 in spring. Those are the medians from NWEA's 2025 norms, so half of eighth graders score above each number and half below. The typical range is about 24 points wide in fall and 26 in spring.

The standard deviation reaches 20 by spring, the largest in the table, so eighth-grade scores are more spread out than any younger grade's.

What is a good MAP math score for 8th grade?

Season first. A fixed score reads lower as the year goes on, because the comparison group keeps learning. The table reads a range of eighth-grade scores against the 2025 norms. Every percentile is approximate; NWEA ties the norms to specific testing weeks and your school's window may differ.

Three readings:

  • Inside the typical range (about 210 to 234 in fall, 216 to 242 in spring). Half of all eighth graders land here. A fall 220 is at about the 46th percentile, just under average and normal.
  • Above the 75th percentile (roughly 235 and up in fall, 243 and up in spring). The top quarter. A fall 240 is at about the 84th percentile and a fall 245 at about the 90th. Schools that use an eighth-grade score for ninth-grade placement, into Geometry or an honors track, set their own thresholds. Ask which season and which number.
  • Below the 25th percentile (under about 210 in fall, under 216 in spring). The bottom quarter. A fall 210 is at about the 25th percentile. At this grade that reading most often points at proportional reasoning and integer arithmetic to review before linear equations can settle.

The 226 from the opening reads at about the 59th percentile in fall and about the 44th by spring. Above average in September, a little under it by May, with no change in the student. The comparison group learned a year of math in between.

How much should an 8th grader's MAP score grow in a year?

The average eighth grader gains about 4 RIT points from fall to winter and about 3 from winter to spring, roughly 7 across the year. That matches seventh grade and is half the fourth-grade figure. Growth on the scale compresses with age by design, so a 7-point year is exactly typical here and should not be read against an elementary-school rate.

Two things for one report:

  • Four points by winter is on pace. Most of the year's growth lands before the winter test at every grade.
  • Level and growth are separate facts. An eighth grader at 226 in fall and 233 in spring grew a typical amount from an above-average start. An eighth grader at 226 in both is above average and did not move. If your child was near the same number a year earlier, that flat line matters at least as much as the percentile. A single score cannot show it. Put the seventh-grade scores next to this one.

NWEA's growth figures are grade-level averages, not targets for one student, and students who start higher tend to gain somewhat fewer points.

What math the test is sampling in 8th grade

Follow one idea across three grades and the eighth-grade score makes more sense. In sixth grade it was a unit rate: 3 cups of flour for 2 cups of sugar is 1.5 cups per cup. In seventh grade it was the constant of proportionality: the number that links every pair in a proportional table. In eighth grade it is slope: the rate of change of a line, read off a graph, a table, or an equation. Same idea, three names, three years. An eighth grader who says "I don't get slope" is often an eighth grader for whom unit rate was a procedure in sixth grade.

  • Linear equations and slope (8.EE.B.5, 8.EE.C.7). Slope as a rate of change, y = mx + b, and solving linear equations including ones with variables on both sides.
  • Systems of equations (8.EE.C.8). First as the point where two graphs cross, then solved on paper.
  • Functions (8.F.A.1, 8.F.A.3). What a function is, comparing two given in different forms, and telling linear from nonlinear. Small in size, large in consequence: this is the part Algebra I assumes is already there.
  • Transformations and the Pythagorean theorem (8.G.A.1, 8.G.B.7). Rotations, reflections, translations, and what they leave unchanged, then the Pythagorean theorem and its uses.
  • Exponents, roots, scientific notation (8.EE.A.1, 8.EE.A.3).

A fall eighth-grade score is standing mostly on seventh grade: proportional relationships, rational number arithmetic, and two-step equations. The test comes before most eighth-grade content has been taught.

The reason the three-grade chain matters: an overall score does not tell you which link is the one that did not hold. Two students can have the same overall 226 and very different skill profiles. They need different work. The math transitions that decide everything follows the same chain from the fraction end.

What to examine alongside the score

Four things worth checking in an eighth grader this fall. Each is a specific behavior, and each is one link in the chain above.

  1. Is this a function? Give a table where x = 2 appears twice with different y values. Ask whether it is a function and why. A child who says "no, because 2 has two outputs" understands the definition. A child who checks whether it "looks linear" is pattern-matching.
  2. What does the 3 mean in y = 3x + 2? Not "the slope." What it means. "Every time x goes up by 1, y goes up by 3" is the rate-of-change understanding that connects back to sixth-grade unit rate. "It's the number in front of x" is the formula without the idea.
  3. Solve 2(x - 3) = 10 two ways. Distribute first, or divide by 2 first. An eighth grader who can do both and say why they agree owns the equation. One who has a single memorized path is fragile the first time the equation is arranged differently.
  4. Are negatives and fractions still automatic? -4 times -1/2. Quick, no hesitation, no sign error. Algebra I assumes this arithmetic is fairly automatic, and sign or fraction errors can derail otherwise-correct algebra.

If the school report shows instructional-area scores alongside the overall RIT, a lower area tells you which part of math to look at first, though it will not name the skill.

What you can do this week

  1. Write down the score, the season, and the percentile. Find the row above and note the quarter.
  2. Line up sixth and seventh grade next to it. Three years of scores show the trajectory. One score shows a point.
  3. Run the four checks over a few evenings. Fifteen minutes. You are looking for which link in the chain is loose, not for a grade.
  4. Work the earliest loose link first. If unit rate is the problem, slope will not settle until it is fixed. Going straight at slope with a sixth-grade gap underneath is how "I don't get slope" becomes "I don't get algebra."
  5. Keep the number and the course separate in conversation. He is in the class he is in. The score is planning information for you; it should not be the reason he thinks he cannot do algebra.

Is 230 a good MAP math score for an 8th grader?

What is a high MAP math score for 8th grade?

A score above about 234 in fall or 242 in spring is in the top quarter for eighth grade. A fall 240 is at about the 84th percentile, a fall 245 at about the 90th, and a fall 250 at about the 94th. A middle-school score in the 250s and above sits well beyond the typical range for the grade. Read it as "well above eighth-grade norms," not as a statement about which high-school course a student has completed.

What MAP score should an 8th grader have for Algebra 1?

The norms do not define algebra readiness, and districts that use MAP for placement set their own thresholds. Readiness for Algebra I depends more on whether proportional reasoning, integer arithmetic, and two-step equations are secure than on the overall number. An eighth grader near the fall average of 222 with those three secure is usually in better shape for the course than one at 235 with a proportional-reasoning gap. Do MAP math scores go above 8th grade?

The RIT scale continues well above the eighth-grade range; the scale has no fixed ceiling. NWEA's public quick-reference sheet, which this page uses, stops at eighth grade, so eighth grade is the last year with a same-grade average in that reference. A very high eighth-grade score sits well above the typical eighth-grade range on the RIT scale. It does not name a course.
